LTFB plans phaseout of overaged jeepneys

ZAMBOANGA CITY (ZNS) -  The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is studying plans to phase-out old public utility jeepneys (PUJs) by next year.

LTFRB Regional Director Atty. Abdulgafar Mohammad said the agency is still studying the proposal and has not statted its implementation this year, but possibly by next year.

The phaseout of old units is envisioned to give way to new units now running the streets.

This is also to reduce traffic congestion brought about by the abundance of PUJs plying streets and fetching passengers in the city and the country.

In this city alone, there appears to be an excess of PUJs plying streets to the barangays.

This is evident by the number of PUJs kept in storage in private parking lots waiting for their turn at loading zones to pick up passengers for their routes. (ZNS) (110414)
