Sulu trench could produce 2
types of tsunami – PhilVocs

ZAMBOANGA CITY (ZNS) – The Sulu Trench earthquake  could generate  two kinds of tsunami  – the localize and distant tsunami, according to  Director Engr.Alan Labayog of the Philippine Vulcanology and Seismology (Philvocs).

Tthe localized tsunami   can occur within  2 to 20 minutes  only while the distant tsunami  will come in an hour coming from the other countries.

According to Labayog,  that  an intensity 8.0 earthquake  can develop up to  32 times more than the Bohol storm surge.

In that case ,  the entire  west coast areas in the city of Zamboanga will not be spared. Such an earthquake will include the areas in Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi,Dipolog and even Palawan, Labayog said.

Based on  record, tsunami is a series of ocean waves caused by an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption Tsunamis  can reach  height of over 100 feet. About   80 percent of tsunami . happen within the Pacific Oceans’ –“Ring of Fire” .

The first wave is not strongest but the successive waves get the biggest and strongest wave that will travel at speed of about 500 miles or 805 kilometers in one hour that is almost as fast as a jet plane  .

If caught  by a tsunami, it is better not to swim but to grab a floating object  and allow  the current to carry you. (Letty M. Militante ) (091214)

  1. It is better to conduct a simulation for earthquakes to predict the effect
